Categories group similar assets, such as HVAC units or IT equipment. Each asset can have one category. Each category has a name, an optional description, and a color.
Assets don’t support custom fields. Use the built-in fields on the asset form, such as Description, SKU, and Serial Number, to record extra details.

Default categories

Every organization starts with these categories:

Create a category

You need permission to manage asset classifications. By default, members can view categories but not change them.
1

Open asset settings

Click Settings at the bottom of the sidebar, then under Resources, click Assets.
2

Start a new category

Under Asset Categories, click Create Custom Category.
3

Enter the details

Enter a Category Name, for example “Vehicles”. Optionally add a Description and pick a Color.
4

Save

Click Create. The category is now available on the asset form.
You can also click Manage next to the Category field while you add or edit an asset. In the Manage Asset Categories dialog, if your organization uses accounting codes, you can also pick a Default purchase account. It fills in the account on purchase lines for assets in that category. To edit, delete, or restore default categories, see Asset settings.

Categorize assets

  • One asset: Open the asset, click Edit, select a Category under Classification, then click Update Asset.
  • Several assets: On the Assets page, select the assets, click Assign Category in the bulk action bar, then select a category.
To see the assets in a category, use the Category filter on the Assets page.
