# Create a purchase request

> Submit a request for goods through the procurement workflow

## Steps

**1. Go to Purchase Requests**

In the left sidebar, click **Purchase Requests**.

**2. Start a new request**

Click **New Request**.

**3. Enter the request details**

Enter a **Title**, such as "Office supplies for Q2", and optionally a **Required By Date**.

**4. Check the department**

**Department** defaults to your department. Every line uses it unless the line sets its own. Change it if the purchase belongs to another department.

**5. Add line items**

Click **Add Item** and choose what you're ordering:

* **Inventory Item** — parts, supplies, and tools tracked by stock quantity. Click **Search inventory** to pick an existing item, or use **Manual Entry** to type a name.
* **Assets** — equipment tracked individually. Search your assets or enter a name, category, manufacturer, and model.

If an inventory item has variants, such as sizes, choose one under **Select a variant**. Each line needs a variant for such an item.

For each item, enter the **Qty**, **Unit**, and **Est. Cost**, plus an optional description. The **Total** updates as you go.

If your organization uses [accounting codes](https://docs.relyant.app/stock/accounting-codes.md), pick an **Account** for the line. It may already be filled in from the item's or category's default. You can also set a **Department** for just that line.

**6. Add notes (optional)**

Use **Internal Notes** for context or justification.

**7. Submit**

Click **Submit for Approval**, or **Save as Draft** to finish later.

After you submit, the request waits in [Approvals](https://docs.relyant.app/stock/approvals.md) for an approver.

## Edit a request

You can edit a request while it's **Draft** or **Submitted**. Open it and click **Edit**. A draft can also be submitted with **Submit** or removed with **Delete**.

## Share a request

From a request's actions menu, click **Print PDF** to download it, or **Send Email** to email it to a recipient. Line variants appear on the PDF and in the email.
