# Remove a member

> Deactivate a member's access to your Relyant organization, or remove them permanently

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Required role:** **Owner** or **Admin**. Only owners can deactivate, reactivate or remove an owner.

When a staff member leaves or no longer needs access to Relyant, deactivate them. They lose access straight away, but their data and history are kept, and you can reactivate them later.

## Deactivate a member

**1. Go to Team Members**

Open **Settings** to go to the Admin console, then click **Team Members** under **Organization**.

**2. Find the member**

Search for or scroll to the member you want to deactivate.

**3. Open the member's menu**

Click the actions menu on the member's row. Clicking the row itself opens their page instead.

**4. Deactivate**

Click **Deactivate Member**, then click **Deactivate** to confirm.

## Staff who are parents

If the person still has children at the school, the confirmation says so and offers **Make them a Parent**. They lose their staff apps but keep the parent view for their children. Click **Deactivate** instead to remove their access completely.

When you change an employee to a leaving status in HRIS with **Change employment status** and tick **Also deactivate their login**, the same choice appears as **Keep them as a Parent**, which is on by default.

## Reactivate or remove permanently

Deactivated members appear on the **Deactivated** tab, with their previous role and who deactivated them. From the actions on their row:

* **Reactivate** gives them their access back.
* **Remove Permanently** deletes the member. This can't be undone.

> [!NOTE]

> To stop a pending invitation, use **Cancel Invitation** on the invitation instead. See [Invite a member](https://docs.relyant.app/organization/members/invite-a-member.md#pending-invitations).
