# Assign and prioritize work orders

> Assign a work order to a member and set or change its priority

> [!NOTE]
>
> You need permission to update work orders. **Owners**, **Admins**, and **Members** have it by default. Without it, you see the assignee but can't change it.

Each work order has one assignee. You can set the assignee when you create the work order or change it later.

## Assign a work order

**1. Open the work order**

In the sidebar, under **Maintenance**, click **Work Orders**, then click the work order.

**2. Choose the assignee**

In the **People** card, click the **Assignee** field. Search for a member and select them. To remove the assignee, select **Unassigned**.

The change saves right away. The new assignee gets an email notification.

> [!TIP]
>
> Which members appear in the assignee list depends on the assignee roles in [work order settings](https://docs.relyant.app/facilities/settings/work-order-settings.md).

To find work orders that still need an owner, filter the **Work Orders** list by **Assignee** and select **Unassigned**.

## Change the priority

**1. Open the work order**

Click the work order you want to change.

**2. Edit the work order**

Click **Edit**.

**3. Pick a priority**

Click the priority button and select **Low**, **Medium**, or **High**.

**4. Save**

Click **Update Work Order**.

The work order's priority appears as a badge at the top of the detail page.
