# Add a location

> Create a building or other top-level location

> [!NOTE]
>
> You need permission to create locations. By default, members and requesters can't create locations.

Start with your top-level locations, such as each building on your campus. You can then [add floors and rooms](https://docs.relyant.app/facilities/locations/add-floors-and-rooms.md) under them.

## Steps

**1. Open Locations**

In the sidebar, under **Resources**, click **Locations**.

**2. Click Add Location**

Click **Add Location** at the top of the page. The **Create New Location** dialog opens.

**3. Enter basic information**

Under **Basic Information**, enter:

* **Location Name** (required), for example "Science Block"
* **Type**, for example **Building**
* **Status**, which defaults to **Active**
* **Description** (optional)
* **Parent Location**: leave this as **None** for a top-level location

**4. Add the address (optional)**

Under **Address**, enter the location's street address.

**5. Add more details (optional)**

Under **Additional Details**, enter the **Capacity** and **Area (sq ft)**.

**6. Make it bookable (optional)**

Under **Booking Settings**, turn on **Can be booked** to show the location in booking flows. You can then add **Booking Notes** for people who book it.

**7. Add images (optional)**

Under **Images**, upload photos or enter an **Image URL**.

**8. Save**

Click **Create Location**. The location appears in the **Locations** list.

> [!TIP]
>
> To add many locations at once, click **Settings** at the top of the **Locations** page, then click **Import Locations**. Download the template from the dialog to see the expected columns.
