# Add an asset

> Create a new asset record in Relyant

>
> You need permission to create assets. By default, members and requesters can't create assets.

## Steps

**1. Open Assets**

In the sidebar, under **Resources**, click **Assets**.

**2. Click Add Asset**

Click **Add Asset** at the top of the page. The **Create New Asset** dialog opens.

**3. Enter basic information**

Under **Basic Information**, enter the **Asset Name**, for example "Air Conditioning Unit A1". This is the only required field. You can also add a **Description** and **SKU**.

**4. Choose a parent asset (optional)**

Under **Asset Hierarchy**, select a **Parent Asset** to group this asset under another one. Leave it empty for a top-level asset. See [Manage asset hierarchy](https://docs.relyant.app/facilities/assets/manage-asset-hierarchy.md).

**5. Assign a location (optional)**

Under **Location**, select an **Assigned Location**. See [Assign a location](https://docs.relyant.app/facilities/assets/assign-location.md).

**6. Classify the asset**

Under **Classification**, select a **Category**, **Status**, and **Condition**. **Status** defaults to **Operational**. To add a category, click **Manage** next to **Category**. See [Asset categories](https://docs.relyant.app/facilities/assets/asset-categories.md).

**7. Make it bookable (optional)**

Under **Booking**, turn on **Available for Booking** to let people reserve the asset. You can then enter a **Capacity**, such as seats or passengers, and **Booking Notes** that people see when they book.

**8. Add manufacturer and financial details (optional)**

Under **Manufacturer Details**, enter the **Manufacturer**, **Model**, and **Serial Number**. Under **Financial Information**, enter the **Purchase Date**, **Purchase Price**, **Warranty Expires** date, and **Estimated Value**.

**9. Add images (optional)**

Under **Images**, upload photos or enter an **Image URL**. See [Add images](https://docs.relyant.app/facilities/assets/add-images.md).

**10. Save**

Click **Create Asset**. The asset appears in the **Assets** list.

> To add many assets at once, click **Settings** at the top of the **Assets** page, then click **Import Assets**.

## Edit an asset

Open the asset and click **Edit** in the actions menu, or click **Edit** in the asset's row menu on the **Assets** page. Make your changes, then click **Update Asset**.
