# Student fields

> Add custom fields to student profiles to capture information your school needs

> **Required role:** **Owner** or **Admin**. Saving custom fields requires permission to update students.

Every student record has a set of built-in fields. Use **Settings → Student Fields** to add your own fields, such as an emergency contact or a uniform size. Custom fields appear on student profiles and the student edit form.

## Built-in fields

The top of the list shows the default fields. They're locked, so you can't edit or remove them.

## Add a custom field

**1. Open the dialog**

Click **Add Field**. The **Add Custom Field** dialog opens.

**2. Name the field**

Enter a **Field Label**, such as `Emergency Contact`. Each label must be unique.

**3. Choose a type**

Pick a **Type**: **Text Field**, **Long Text**, or **Select**.

**4. Add options for a Select field**

If you chose **Select**, type each choice under **Options** and click **Add**. A select field needs at least one option.

**5. Mark it required (optional)**

Turn on **Required** if staff must fill it in.

**6. Save**

Click **Add Field**. The field saves right away and appears under **Custom fields**.

Required fields show a red asterisk in the list.

## Edit or delete a custom field

* **Edit** — click the pencil icon on a field to open **Edit Field**, make your changes, and click **Update**.
* **Delete** — click the delete icon and confirm. Existing student data stored in the field is no longer displayed, and you can't undo this.

> To classify students into groups such as houses or streams, use [student labels](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/settings/labels.md) instead of a select field. Labels can be filtered across the student list.
