# Parent portal

> Give parents a branded portal to see their children's attendance and submit absence excusals

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Required role:** **Owner** or **Admin**. Changing portal settings requires permission to update the organization.

The parent portal is a branded site where parents sign in to follow their children's attendance and submit excusals. Go to **Settings → Parent Portal** to set it up. The page is titled **Portal Access**.

## Set up the portal

**1. Set a portal name**

In the **Portal URL** card, click **Set portal name** and enter a name using lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. Relyant checks that the name is available as you type. The name is separate from your organization slug and becomes part of the portal URL.

**2. Enable the portal**

Turn on **Enable portal**. When it's off, the portal is unreachable even if a name is set.

**3. Share the URL**

Copy the portal URL from the **Portal URL** card and share it with parents.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Changing an existing portal name breaks every link you've already shared. Relyant asks you to type the current name to confirm before it saves the change.

## Optional settings

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Login restrictions** | Limits sign-in to specific email domains, such as `school.org`. Leave it empty to allow any email address. |
| **Welcome message** | A subtitle shown on the portal login page below your organization name. If you leave it empty, parents see **Sign in to continue**. |

## Who can sign in

Only people linked as a guardian of a student in your organization can use the portal. Add guardians from each student's profile. Anyone else who tries to sign in sees a message telling them to contact the school administrator.

Parent access comes from the link to a child, not from a role. Staff who are also parents at your school, such as a teacher whose child attends, can use the portal too. They choose **My children** from their profile menu to open it. Their staff access doesn't change, and the portal only shows their own children.

## Notifications to parents

Parents with an account are notified when:

* Their child is marked absent or late
* The school approves an absence note they sent, or doesn't approve it

They get these in their inbox and on the Relyant mobile app. Absences and absence notes that aren't approved also arrive by email. Parents can change them under **Your children** in their notification settings. A guardian saved as a contact only gets an email when the child is marked absent. See [Guardians](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/people/guardians.md#attendance-emails-to-contacts).

## What parents see

Parents sign in with their **Email address** and a six-digit verification code sent to that email. No password is needed.

After signing in, parents see a home page for their child with:

* **Recent attendance**, grouped by month, with the share of days present
* **Excusals** they've submitted and their status: **Pending review**, **Approved**, or **Not approved**
* **Student profile** details, such as student number, status, date of birth, gender, and enrollment date

Parents with more than one child can switch between them. They can also update their own details on **My Profile**, including name, phone, date of birth, gender, and religion. Their email can't be changed there.

### Submit an excusal

From **Recent attendance**, parents click **Submit excusal** to open **Submit Attendance Excusal**. They pick the **Date of absence**, turn on **Covers multiple days** for longer absences, enter a **Reason**, and can add a link to supporting documents such as a medical certificate.

Whether the excusal applies immediately or waits for staff review depends on your [attendance settings](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/settings/attendance.md).
