# Take attendance

> Mark daily attendance for a class, grade, or the whole school, add comments, and review change history

Attendance is one record per student per school day. You mark it from the **Attendance** page, where you can work class by class, a grade at a time, or across every untracked student at once.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Who can mark attendance:** Owners and Admins can mark any class. Teachers, Requesters, and custom roles with attendance edit permission can only mark classes they're actively assigned to. Other classes show a lock icon and open as view only. See [Roles and permissions](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/settings/roles-and-permissions.md).

## Statuses

Each status belongs to a category that decides how it counts in reports. New organizations start with **Present**, **Late**, **Sick**, **Excused**, **Absent**, and **Early Leave**. Admins can add, reorder, and archive statuses in [Attendance settings](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/settings/attendance.md).

A student with no record on a school day is **Untracked**. Relyant doesn't assume untracked students were present.

## Choose a day

1. In the rail, click **Attendance**, then **Attendance** in the panel. The page opens on today.
2. Use the arrows or the date picker to change the day. The arrows skip weekends and holidays and stop at today, and the date picker doesn't offer future dates. When you're on another day, click **Today** to jump back. Dates are limited to the academic year selected in the year picker.

Weekends, holidays, and other non-school days from your [school calendar](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/settings/school-calendar.md) show a message instead of a roster. You can't record attendance on those days.

## Find the students to mark

The status counts row at the top shows how many students are **To mark** and how many have each status. Click a status to list only those students, grouped by grade or class, then search by name. Click a student to open their profile. Click the status again to clear the filter.

Below it, switch between **By Grade** and **By Class**. You can search, filter classes by **Grade**, and sort by name or **% Present**. Each row shows:

* **Marked** — how many students are marked out of the total, and how many are left **to mark**, or **Complete**.
* A bar split by status, so you can see the mix at a glance.
* **Present** — the share of the whole group marked present or late. Unmarked students count as not present, so a half-marked class reads about 50%. A dash means nothing is marked yet.

On a class row, click the open icon next to the name to go to the class page.

## Mark attendance

**1. Open a group**

Click a grade or class row. The marking panel slides over the list, or opens as a sheet on smaller screens. To work through every unmarked student in the school, click **Mark N unmarked**.

**2. Set statuses**

Click a status button next to each student, such as **P** for Present. A legend above the list shows what each letter means. Click the selected button again to clear it. Each change saves immediately, and the toast offers **Undo**. The header tracks progress, for example "18 of 24 marked".

On a phone, tap **Mark** next to a student and pick a status by name. Tap **Clear mark** to remove it.

**3. Mark the rest in one go**

Click **Mark N present** to mark every unmarked student with your first present status. To use another status, open **Mark rest as** and pick one. **Clear attendance** in the same menu removes the records for every student you can edit.

Use the tabs at the top of the panel, **All**, **To mark**, and one per status, to filter the roster. With the panel open, click another row to switch groups, use the up and down arrow keys to step through rows, or press Esc or click outside to close it.

Bulk actions skip classes you aren't assigned to.

### Mark with the keyboard

On a computer, click a student's row, then type a status letter, such as `P`. The student is marked and the next student is selected. Use the up and down arrow keys to move between students, and press Backspace to clear a mark.

### Statuses that need a note

If a status has **Requires Note** turned on in [Attendance settings](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/settings/attendance.md), picking it asks for a note first. Enter the note and click **Save**. These statuses aren't offered in **Mark rest as**, so you mark those students one at a time.

### Add a comment or delete a record

After you mark a student, click the note icon on their row. In the **Note** dialog, enter your comments and click **Save**, or click **Delete** to remove the record so the student is untracked again. Saved comments show under the student's name.

## Mark a single class

Marking reminder emails link to the **Take Attendance** page for one class. Use the arrows or date picker to change the day. You can't mark future dates.

* Click **Mark all Present** to record every student with your first present status, then change individual students.
* Click the note icon to add a note for a student.
* Click a student's avatar to open their history.

Students with an excusal show **Excusal awaiting review** or **Excusal submitted** under their name. See [Excusals](https://docs.relyant.app/edu/attendance/excusals.md).

## View change history

Each record keeps a history. The history panel shows the **Current Status** and a **Change History** list with who made each change, when, and whether it came from a teacher, a parent, or the system.
